The building of a literary tradition is always a very complex phenomenon that is rooted in historical and social circumstances but that is valuable to the extent to which it manages to transcend those circumstances and to bestow on them new fecund significations. It is with this principle in mind that the present book has been assembled. It brings together the most significant moments in the development of English literature from its Anglo-Saxon beginnings to William Shakespeare. Hopefully, it will offer its readers a good opportunity to learn about how some of our brilliant ancestors refined their solitude and their encounter with themselves.
