The first question that one might think of when taking a quick look at this volume is what gathers exile, multiculturalism and identity together between the covers of the same book. Are these concepts of interest nowadays? Should we speak about culture, multicultural societies and exile in this century that apparently has managed to erase borders and limits, when everyone can be a migrant, the free circulation of goods and people is common ground, and the realities of multiculturalism might easily seem obsolete as hardly can anyone encounter monocultural societies today.
The authors selected in this volume are either exiles whose experiences of adjusting to the new realities of an adoptive multicultural society are registered in their autobiographic writings, or authors that chose to focus and describe the complex forces that shape and fuel multicultural societies in general, these having a definite impact on the individual experiences of average people caught in the whirlwind of their daily life.
